Upscaling school restorative approaches to foster school climate and improve students’ competences on managing conflicts

Schools & Solutions proposes to develop an innovative and interactive way to include the school community (students, teachers, principals, parents, community NGO, etc.) in creating solutions for problems. More precisely​, the project aims to use upscaling existing restorative approaches and train teachers to deal with complex school realities, using restorative practices, creating mechanisms for improving student behavior, and reducing the need for suspensions.​

The goals of the project are:

  • To develop innovative and interactive ways to include the school community (students, teachers, principals, parents, community NGO, etc.) in creating solutions for problems
  • To train teachers to deal with complex school realities, using restorative practices
  • To create mechanisms for improving student behavior and reducing the need for suspensions helping to respond to conflict in ways that repair damaged relationships
  • ​To convert damage on opportunities for students to take responsibility and accountability for their actions, and face the impact of their behavior on others

Expected results of the project

  • Enhancement of the ability to deliver solutions through the usage of restorative practices
  • Adoption of mechanisms for improving student behavior and reducing the need for suspensions
  • Capacity to prevent conflict
  • Ability to repair damaged relationships
  • Development of opportunities for students to take responsibility and accountability for their actions, and face the impact of their behavior on others
  • Improvement of educational achievement
  • Reduction of exclusionary discipline incidents that can ultimately lead to drop out of school
  • Increase of safety and wellbeing
  • Prevention of negative feelings of fear, anger, and blame
  • Prevention of stigmatization and social exclusion
